Having a child-centered divorce in California

Going through a divorce is difficult enough, but when children are involved, it can be even more complicated and emotionally draining. It is important to remember that your child’s well-being should be the top priority during and after a divorce.

Stay away from court as much as possible

Divorce litigation is not only expensive, but it can also be damaging to children. For one, going to court can prolong the divorce process and make it more contentious. It can also make your affairs public, which can be embarrassing and harmful to your child.

There are many ways of divorcing without going to court, such as mediation and collaborative divorce. These methods are often less expensive, quicker and less stressful for everyone involved. If you do have to go to court, be sure to keep your child out of the middle of it as much as possible.

Avoid speaking negatively about your ex in front of your child

Even if you are the one who initiated the divorce, it is important to avoid badmouthing your ex in front of your child. Doing so can damage your child’s relationship with both you and your ex and make the divorce process more difficult for everyone. If you need to vent about your ex, do it in front of a friend or therapist, not your child.

Be honest with your child

Your child will likely have a lot of questions about the divorce, and it is important to be honest with them. However, you should avoid giving them too much information as this can be overwhelming. Stick to the basics and answer their questions simply.

Create a parenting plan

A parenting plan is a document that outlines how you and your ex will co-parent after the divorce. It should include things like where your child will live, what their schedule will be and other decisions about their upbringing. Creating a parenting plan can help to reduce conflict between you and your ex as well as make things easier for your child.

If you are going through a divorce, remember to keep your child’s best interests in mind. With work on your part, you can make the process as smooth as possible for everyone involved.
