Is self-care important when going through a divorce?

On Behalf of | May 14, 2020 | Uncategorized

These days, self-care is a great way to combat stress, anxiety and the overall pressures of life. When you go through a particularly trying time, like divorce, it is important that you remember to take care of yourself. It is easy to let difficulties overwhelm you, but if this happens, the ordeal may only become worse.

The goal for most California residents who are ending their marriages is to get through the process as quickly as possible. If you let your well-being fall to the wayside by throwing yourself into the divorce proceedings, it may not prove as beneficial as you had hoped.

Why is self-care important?

As mentioned, divorce can feel overwhelming. If you think that putting all of your effort into completing the process quickly is the best route to follow, you may want to think again. If you do not practice self-care during this time, you may find yourself stressed out, unable to make clear decisions, feeling tired, feeling anxious and constantly worried about what the outcomes of the case will mean.

By focusing on your well-being, you may help keep yourself in a calm state of mind that can help you think clearly and make sound decisions. Some ways you can practice self-care during your divorce include the following:

  • Create a daily schedule: It is likely that you will still have work and family matters to address during your divorce, and having a daily schedule to help you manage your time could help lessen some of the stress.
  • Count on family and friends: You will likely need someone to vent to and a shoulder to cry on at various times during your divorce. Counting on your family and friends for that emotional support could help you find comfort.
  • Assess and accept your feelings: Your emotions may go through a wide range during your divorce, which can be difficult and tiring. Journaling about your feelings may help you better understand how you truly feel and accept that what you feel is valid.
  • Let go: Change can be difficult for anyone, and divorce is a major life change. Rather than trying to hold on to how things were, it may benefit you to let go and focus on new goals in life.

Asking for help is another important way to practice self-care during your divorce. You may need extra help around the house, with your kids and handling various other matters while addressing this hectic time in your life. Plus, you will likely also need help with the divorce process itself, and contacting an experienced family law attorney could be in your best interests.
