U.S. divorce rate down, Gen X and millennials may be the reason

Statistics show that from 2008 to 2016, the divorce rate has dropped a whopping 18 percent. According to a study by the University of Maryland, this decrease in divorce could be attributable to Americans under the age of 45.

Fewer people are getting married nowadays, and researchers found that younger people, particularly millennials, are waiting until they’re older to get married. This is because many young people would rather wait to tie the knot until they feel stable in terms of their finances and their careers. Also, studies show that people with lower income and education levels choose to live together and have kids together without getting married.

Some experts believe that the divorce rate is actually falling due to an aging population, as people are less likely to get divorced when they are older. However, according to a U.S. Census bureau survey, the divorce rate still dropped eight percent, even when controlling for age and other factors.

Statistics also show that while younger people are staying married, older people seem to be divorcing at record rates. Bowling Green’s National Center for Family and Marriage Research found that from 1990 to 2015, the divorce rate doubled for people ages 55 to 64 and tripled for people 65 years of age and older. It seems that many of these older people got married at a young age, then get divorced and remarried later in life.

While the divorce rate may be falling, many Redwood City couples still find that ending their marriage is the best option for their families. Divorce often requires you and your spouse to come to terms on many issues, including property division, child custody and support, and spousal support. A divorce attorney can help you resolve these issues and make the post-divorce transition easier for you and your family.
