Filing a response to a divorce petition

The first step of a divorce in California generally requires one spouse to file a petition for divorce with the courts. What happens next will depend on whether the other spouse files a response to the divorce petition and whether the couple reaches an agreement regarding their divorce.

"Flip or Flop" stars divorce is official

Christina and Tarek El Moussa, stars of the popular HGTV show "Flip or Flip," have officially ended their marriage. The former couple, who was married in 2009, decided to separate after an argument in December of 2016 resulted in a call to the police and guns being seized from the couple's home. In January of 2017, Tarek filed a divorce petition, asking for joint physical and legal custody of the couple's two young children. Christina responded to the petition in August of 2017, also requesting joint custody. The parties have reached an agreement and the divorce has been finalized.

How is child support determined in California?

If you and your spouse are divorcing and you have minor children, the children will likely split their time between you and your spouse's house once the divorce is finalized. In many cases, the child will stay primarily with one parent to keep their schedules consistent, particularly during the school year. The other parent will typically be granted parenting time and be required to pay child support to provide for the child's necessities. Child custody and support issues can be a major hurdle for many divorcing couples, so it is helpful to know how child support is handled in California.

The new year often means more divorces

Now that the holidays are over, many couples make the difficult decision to end their marriages. In fact, more people get divorced during these three months than during any other time of the year. The lowest number of divorces occurs during the summer months and during the holidays.
